If you’ve ever ordered a new pair of glasses and been asked, “Would you like to add anti-reflective coating?”, you may have wondered whether it was worth the extra cost. In this blog, we’ll cover what anti-reflective coating is, how it works, who benefits most, and whether it’s a smart investment for your vision needs.

What is an anti-reflective coating?

Anti-reflective (AR) coating—also called anti-glare coating—is a thin, multi-layer treatment applied to the surface of eyeglass lenses. It reduces the amount of light that reflects off the lens, allowing more light to pass through to your eye instead.

Without AR coating, standard lenses can reflect up to 8–12% of light. With modern anti-reflective lens coatings, that number drops to less than 1%.

How does an anti-reflective lens coating work?

An AR coating uses microscopic layers of metallic oxides applied to the lens surface. These layers cancel out light waves that would otherwise bounce off the lens and create glare or reflections.

It works on both sides of the lens:

  • The front surface reduces glare from sunlight, headlights, and bright overhead lighting
  • The back surface reduces the light that reflects off the inside of the lens back into your eye

People often overlook that back-surface reflection, but it can significantly affect visual clarity, especially when driving at night or working under fluorescent lights.

Who benefits most from AR coating?

AR coating isn’t just for one type of patient. Many people notice a considerable difference in their daily comfort and clarity.

You’re likely to benefit most if you:

  • Spend several hours a day in front of a computer, tablet, or phone
  • Drive frequently, especially at night
  • Work under fluorescent or LED lighting
  • Notice halos or glare around lights, especially after dark
  • Wear high-index (thinner) lenses, which naturally reflect more light
  • Have a profession that involves being in front of others (teaching, presenting, video calls)
  • Want your glasses to look cleaner and more polished in photos

High-index lenses tend to reflect more light than standard plastic lenses. For stronger prescriptions, an anti-reflective coating helps your lenses look clearer and more natural instead of drawing attention with glare and reflections.

What patients notice most in everyday life

Beyond the technical explanation, here’s what people experience day-to-day with anti-reflective lenses:

  • Less eye strain — Reduced squinting and fatigue during long periods on screens
  • Clearer night vision — Fewer halos and starbursts around headlights while driving at night
  • Better appearance on camera — Less glare during photos, video calls, and virtual meetings
  • Less distracting reflections — Lenses look more transparent, so your eyes are more visible instead of glare
  • More comfortable reading — Easier focus when reading books, menus, or screens without visual distractions

Is an anti-reflective coating the same as a blue light coating?

AR coating and blue light filtering are two separate things, though they’re often offered together.

Standard AR coating reduces reflections from visible light. Blue light-blocking lenses (sometimes called blue light glasses) filter out a portion of high-energy blue light emitted by digital screens and LED lighting.

Some lens options combine both features, giving you anti-reflective properties along with blue light reduction. If you experience digital eye strain, headaches after screen use, or difficulty sleeping after nighttime screen exposure, you may want to ask about a combined lens option during your next eye exam

Is an AR coating worth the extra cost?

For most people, yes.

If you spend time on screens, drive at night, or want to see and look your best, AR coating is one of the highest value upgrades you can add to your lenses. It improves how well you see and how comfortable your eyes feel throughout the day.

That said, your lifestyle, prescription, and lens type all factor into whether it’s the right fit for you. The best way to find out is to talk it through with your eye doctor
