Dry Eye

Diagnosis and Treatment

Are your eyes constantly dry and itchy? Does it feel like something is stuck in your eye but there’s nothing there? If so, you may have dry eye. Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears to keep them moist, or when the tears evaporate too quickly. Figuring out what’s causing your dry eye is crucial to getting the treatment you need to relieve discomfort.

At Advanced Vision Care in Mansfield, Fort Worth, and DeSoto, Texas, and Cedar Hill Eye Care in Cedar Hill, Texas, our skilled eye care professionals have the expertise and technology to properly diagnose and treat dry eye.

What causes dry eye?

The most common reason people develop dry eye is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). The meibomian glands located in your eyelids produce oil that covers your eye surface and keeps your tears from evaporating. When these glands aren’t functioning properly, the oil becomes thick and clogs the glands, leading to dry eye.

Other causes of dry eye include:

  • Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives, and menopause
  • Certain medications such as antihistamines and decongestants
  • Certain diseases and conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, arthritis, diabetes, or thyroid problems
  • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids)
  • Exposure to cold, smoke, and dry climates
  • Activities like driving, reading, computer use, or watching TV cause you to blink less often, and blinking less can also cause dry eye.

Diagnosing & treating dry eye

If you’re experiencing dry eye symptoms, it’s important to see our eye doctor for a proper diagnosis. During your visit, we will perform a thorough exam to determine the extent of your dry eye and uncover any underlying causes.

Once we have a clear understanding of your condition, we can then develop a personalized treatment plan that works best for you. This may include using artificial tears or other lubricating eye drops to help relieve dryness and improve tear quality. We may also recommend lifestyle changes such as adjusting your diet or taking frequent breaks from screens to help prevent further irritation.
